A good college refrigerator will save you time and money. These little wonders will keep your food cool and cold while you study, and are always ready for you to store your favorite beverage for when you return from class. Of course the thing to consider first with these units is their size. Get a good measurement of the area where you will be placing your college refrigerator and make sure that you get 'outside measurements' of the unit before you purchase it. Make your purchase based on the size of the unit you are looking for and whether or not a freezer is important to you, as well as a few other minor points such as: you want to make sure that you have chosen a unit that will keep your food cold for a good long time, and that will not fluctuate in temperature.
Choosing decent college refridgerators is an art and science when you get right down to it. You will find that most of these units run from 1.7 cu feet on up to 2, 2.5 and even 3.5 cubic foot units. Just make sure you plan on how much food, and beverage you need to keep cold, and ask your roommate, if you are including him or her in the decision, what their cooling requirements are. On the low priced end (and smaller sized) are the compact refrigerators coming in at 1.7 cubic feet. They continue on up in sizes and shapes, some are really cubes (completely square), while other units are rectangular and will fit in quite nicely under a counter, or wherever you have room.
Some units will also offer you a mini freezer as part of the top part of the fridge, but they cannot keep too many items frozen, so be wary of that. Remember you will need to keep the door of the refrigerator clear for opening and storing items as you will probably be opening and closing it several times per day. As you do that you will have to be cautious when keeping the door open (for too long) which can result in a huge loss of cold air and cooling from your fridge. Try not to keep the door standing open for too long (such as more than 35-55 seconds).
One other minor cause for concern is the noise of the refrigerator running. You will want to consider that and be courteous to your friends and roommates that may be in the room more than you are. Will it run quietly, and stay quiet - especially at night when you need the shut eye? Hopefully your mini fridge for college will keep your food cool without too much noise. Whether you need it or not, the portable fridge option is also available - but it's likely that it will not give you enough benefits to make it worth your while, and you'll do better sticking to a mini compact refrigerator to get the job done.
So, those are the major and minor issues to keep in mind as you choose a good college refrigerator to keep your food and beverages cool/cold - hopefully for the life of your college years. If you choose a really good model (usually more expensive), you may find that it will last you for your entire 4 year college life - and serving you well for a long time. Hopefully without any of the service or repair headaches either.
